Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of one of the award-winning houses from the 2024 Australian Institute of Architects, ACT Architecture Awards. Hyde Place Modern is an example of the joy that can happen when clients who fell in love with a piece of Canberra’s modernist soul collaborate with architects who love it as much as they do.
Hyde Place Modern was originally designed by architect John H. Dalgarno in 1966, and whilst enjoying perfect orientation on a north facing block at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Canberra’s inner south, it had suffered the effects of time and lack of maintenance.
With minor changes to layout, investments were made in improving thermal performance whilst creating a sense of fun in the interiors through colour, texture and finishes selection. The finished house presents as a standout example of how our modernist homes can be brought up to modern standards through highly considered intervention and care.

Since 2011, THE MILL: ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN has produced designs that celebrate the beauty and simplicity of the different spaces in which we live, love, learn and work. We celebrate a long history of people-centric design. Our focus is always on our clients, and how we can support their lives through good design.
The Mill is rooted in the principles of climate-responsive architecture while grounded in modernist ideals that prioritise function through clean, efficient design. Its projects are celebrated by clients and awarded by peers.
The team is led by nominated architect and founding director Shannon Battisson (ARB ACT 2342/NSW10239), and interior designer Sarah Welsh. Together Shannon and Sarah lead a specialised team of passionate architects, interior designers and drafts people working towards a common vision.
